Synopsis by Robert Firsching

The title of Greek filmmaker Maria Gavala's intriguing film about the extremely opposite life views and behavior patterns of two female cousins is the same as that of a magazine favored by its heroine, young Ismina (Yiota Festa). In the magazine's pages, the pretty Athenian office worker finds the poetic expressions of dreams and mythical fantasies, which gives her comfort as the events of her life become excruciatingly stressful in the face of moral dilemmas. The root of these dilemmas is her cousin, Dina (Maritina Passari), who couldn't possibly be more different than Ismina in both temperament and moral outlook. Ismina's strange simultaneous attraction and repulsion to her cousin leads her to aid Dina in a plot to rob their stingy, controlling grandmother in order to teach the old woman a lesson. Of course, neither of the women's motives are as simple as they seem, and the act leads to completely divergent follow-up actions by each. Less a thriller than a psychologically probing juxtaposition of character, To Aroma tis Violettas ultimately raises more questions than it has time to answer, but is a worthwhile attempt. Nikos Kamtsis co-stars with Akis Davis and Yiannis Hadjiyiannis.
