Synopsis by Hal Erickson
A full assessment of the Indonesian film industry has yet to be written due to a paucity of available films in the U.S. One of the better Indonesian imports of recent years was 1986's Titan Serambut Dibelah Tujuh. A city-trained teacher's progressive methods cause resentment in a faraway village. The locals attempt to dispose of the teacher by accusing him of attempted rape. In a related development, a young girl is accused of being immoral after resisting the advances of a "pious" citizen. It's up to a travelling Moslem preacher to expose the community's rampant hypocrisy. The English-language translation of the film's title is The Narrow Bridge.
