Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka

In this Chinese soap opera about the grief of wrong political views and how such wrong views can ruin a relationship, there is very little of interest for most Western audiences -- especially those who never found the "Gang of Four" a personally wrenching topic, even if reprehensible. In brief, the storyline revolves around a love affair between Song Wei (Wang Fuli) and Luo Qun (Shi Weijian) that ended because of Luo's political fuzziness. Now, many years have gone by and Song Wei is pinch-hitting for her husband in the office of rehabilitation (political therapy, not physical) and she wonders why her husband has denied Luo Qun his application. Eventually, the cold marriage between Song Wei and her husband is contrasted with the warm-hearted relationship between Luo Qun and his wife, but in the end, Luo is officially rehabilitated and Song Wei's marriage has failed.
