Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
This film anthology includes short festival pieces from different directors. Their length runs from 2 to 27 minutes. The first piece, like the last, is called Threshold. The second piece is Masters of the Sky, about skydiving. The third, An American Time Capsule, uses flash-frame techniques to condense 300 years of imagery from American history into 3 minutes. Trendsetter is a cartoon about a loopy hero who leads a group of peasants, lemming-like, to their doom. The Birth of Aphrodite recreates the mythical sea-birth of the goddess Aphrodite using special effects; Steel is the sixth short, inspired by the computers of the day. In A Young Man's Romance a naive young man cannot tell the difference between an artwork and a girl. She Is Like A Rainbow is an abstract piece, set to the music of the Rolling Stones. The film ends as it began, with Threshold, which is about a man's death.
