At first glance, the British weekly This Is David Lander was a legitimate investigative-reporter documentary series, complete with hand-held camerawork, knocked-down doors, and bleeped-out profanities. It soon became obvious, however, that the whole thing was a carefully contrived spoof, especially since the title character, a Geraldo-type muckracker who seldom looked before he leapt, was habitually beaten up by the people he interviewed. Stephen Fry starred as David Lander in this Channel 4 laugh-fest, which aired from October 31 to December 6, 1988. Two years later, the property was revived with a different star and a new title, This Is David Harper.
