Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter

This video is part 19 in the 26-volume World at War series that chronicles the history of World War II. Laurence Olivier narrates this highly acclaimed series, which first appeared on television in 1974. Episode 19 covers the events that led up to the Battle of the Bulge, and the hard-won Allied victory there in August of 1944. The Allies had the Germans on the run with no escape route. The Allied decision to stop short of the Rhine River and wait for supplies also gave the Nazis a chance to regroup and launch a counterattack. Archival film footage shows the fierce fighting that ensued.
