Synopsis by Mark Deming
Born in 1911, artist Louise Bourgeois came to the United States in 1938, and in the 1940s began making a name for herself as a sculptor. Initially working with abstract forms, Bourgeois later began using more representational images in works that reflected the innocence and playful qualities of childhood, as well as the sensual perspectives of adults. In 2004, documentary filmmaker Brigitte Cornand paid a call on Bourgeois at her studio, and in The Whisper of the Whistling Water, the artist discusses her life and her work, often with great humor, using her old sketches as a springboard and sharing her current works on fabric.
