A note of explanation for the uninitiated: during the Second World War, the so-called "Atlantic Lifeline" consisted of a string of convoys, or maritime vehicles (such as merchant ships) traveling together throughout the Atlantic to offer logistical support to one another in the fight against the Nazis. Ironically - given the fact that the Soviet Union and Great Britain sat on opposite sides of the fence for much of the war - the Atlantic lifeline, during its tenure, helped foster the survival of both countries. Germany thus wanted nothing more than to sever the lifeline, largely via the employment of lethal U-Boats. The fact that many of the said merchant ships were unarmed not only did little to further the Allied cause, but yielded horrific Allied casualties. This documentary uses elements such as interviews with veterans and extensive CG animation to explore numerous facets of the "Convoy War," including the schematics of the convoy system proper, the initial Allied defeats in this sphere, and the technological leaps forward necessary to vanquish the fleets of U-Boats.
