No relation to the 1915 Charlie Chaplin classic of the same name, The Tramp was a three-reel melodrama released in the U.S. by Pathe's Eclectic Films division. The scene is a farmhouse, where an escaped convict has taken refuge. Also in the vicinity is a tramp, who after taking a siesta in a haystack sneaks into the farmhouse in hopes of finding a fast meal and some loose change. The owner of the farm comes upon the escaped prisoner, and a desperate struggle ensues, culminating with the owner's murder at the hands of the convict. Unfortunately, the tramp is arrested for the murder and placed on trial, where after enduring an intense interrogation he suffers a nervous breakdown. Meanwhile, the actual culprit betrays himself to the police, and in trying to escape he is shot down by the Law. Mortally wounded, the murderer is removed to the same hospital where the tramp is recuperating. With his dying breath, the convict exonerates the tramp, paving the way for a happy (or at least satisfying) ending.
