Synopsis by Mark Deming
Filmmaker Vladimir Perovic offers a fascinating look at a town where life stubbornly refuses to move with the times and people follow their own eccentric path in this documentary. Cuce is a small town in Montenegro that's stuck in the driest and most thinly populated part of the country. Cuce is not a place where one often expects to find much happening, but a visit to the town leads to encounters with a strange a diverse variety of characters. A man who raises goats for a living demonstrates the language he's created to communicate with his animals while berating the lack of character in the present day. A woman who is looking for the man of her dreams reveals she's prepared to move into a cave if it means finding true love. The village's most powerful man discusses his various professions -- politician, notary, doctor and barber. A man who earns a living making charcoal shows off his workspace and shares his views on contemporary politics. A man who is helping to build a new road shows off his excavating tools -- his bare hands. And a youngster who wants to be a farmer some day shares what he knows about the roots of his plants. The Thirst Of A Stone Sea was an official selection at the 2008 London International Documentary Festival.
