Synopsis by Hal Erickson

The British miniseries The Splendid Spur was based on the same-named 1889 adventure novel, the first such effort by the prolific Sir Arthur Quiller Couch (then writing pseudonymously as "Q"). Set during the English Civil War -- to be precise, the years 1642 and 1643 -- the series chronicled the exploits of one Mr. John Marvel, a loyalist to King Charles. Although future Doctor Who leading man Patrick Troughton is frequently listed as the star of the series, he actually played the secondary role of Captain Lake Settle. The six half-hour episodes of The Splendid Spur were transmitted by the BBC from February 28 to April 4, 1960.
