This adaptation of Herman Sudermann's novel bears little resemblance to the 1933 version starring Marlene Dietrich. Shopgirl Lily Kardos (Elsie Ferguson) meets Senator Calkins (Frank Losee), who marries her after she has turned down his illicit advances. But the Senator's housekeeper, Ann Merkle (Corinne Uzell), is jealous of Lily. When she discovers that family friend Dick Laird (Crauford Kent) is attracted to Lily, Ann gets him to go into Lily's boudoir and calls the Senator in. Even though Lily insists she is innocent, he angrily tosses her out. So she goes to live with Laird and is happy until she meets talented and idealistic musician, Stephen Bennett (Cyril Fletcher). They fall in love, and he asks her to have dinner with him and his father (Ned Burton). But his father has heard of her reputation and tries to disillusion Stephen by getting Lily drunk. At first Stephen is horrified, but then he realizes his father tricked him and he tells Lily he still wants to marry her. But Lily believes that she will stand in the way of his success and returns to Laird. The film's director, Joseph Kaufman, died before its release.
