Synopsis by Mark Deming

A veritable who's who of famous comedians have come to Springfield for a special fund-raising event, but Bart Simpson (voice of Nancy Cartwright) is appalled to discover that local legend Krusty the Clown (voice of Dan Castellaneta) hasn't been added to the bill. Bart persuades organizer and headliner Jay Leno to give Krusty a spot in the show, but the clown's offensive and out-of-date material goes over like a lead balloon, and subsequent attempts by Krusty to juice up his act fail miserably. Convinced he spent more time on marketing than material, Krusty decides to retire, but in his farewell show, he delivers a venomous screed against the current state of comedy and television that brings down the house. It becomes clear the world wants an angrier and edgier Krusty, and the clown works up a new act to match his new image. However, when a pair of auto company admen ask Krusty to endorse a new sport utility vehicle, the clown's rejection of corporate culture proves to be short-lived. "The Last Temptation of Krust" features voice cameos from Jay Leno, Steven Wright, Janeane Garofalo, Bobcat Goldthwait and Bruce Baum, all appearing as themselves, while Hank Williams Jr. contributes the SUV jingle. The episode first aired on February 22, 1998.
