Synopsis
"Origins," Part 1 of this six-part series, explores "the story of life and how it came to be" focuses on the first multicelled creature (the "animal Eve," as narrator Peter Coyote calls it): the sponge. Sponges don't have defined shapes or nervous systems, but they do "eat," as University of California (Santa Cruz) biologist Christina Diaz sees (with the help of a nontoxic dye) while diving in Indonesia. They were also the first creatures to reproduce sexually and they interact with other creatures---there's even a "killer" sponge.
