The shots fired come from Jim Lester (Tom Tyler) and Cortez (Frank Lanning), who succeed in creating a disturbance long enough for Mona Cortez (Dorothy Gulliver) to slip away. The Phantom, meanwhile, kills Hollister (James Carlyle), another of the seven men who know the identity of the mystery killer. Fearing that the masked villain may indeed be her own father, Mona goes after him. Jim, in turn, follows Mona, unaware that Martin Blair (William Desmond), yet another of the seven, has asked his henchmen to "take good care of him." A gang of mysterious Night Riders, who may or may not be under command of The Phantom, kidnaps Sheriff Ryan (Frank Hagney) and as chapter four reaches its conclusion, Mona, having met with an accident, is in danger of being trampled by a pack of wild horses.
