After the longest recap of the entire serial, chapter 14 of The Phantom reveals how the jungle hero (Tom Tyler) is saved in the nick of time from drowning in the hidden cistern by Devil (Ace the Wonder Dog), who attacks henchman Marsden (George Chesebro). Byron (Guy Kingsford), now in league with evil Dr. Bremmer (Francis McDonald), traps Professor Davidson (Frank Shannon), Diana Palmer (Jeanne Bates) and the Phantom in the catacombs, claiming only one exit. Bremmer, meanwhile, has his lieutenant Drake (Kermit Maynar) mine the chamber. The ensuing explosion appears to have killed both The Phantom and Byron.
