In the opening of chapter two of Columbia's The Phantom, Geoffrey Prescott, alias The Phantom (Tom Tyler), is saved in the nick of time from both the quicksand and a hungry alligator by his faithful dog Devil (Ace the Wonder Dog). The Davidson expedition, meanwhile, is having problems not only with warring natives but also Max Bremmer (Kenneth McDonald) and his henchmen, the latter descending on the party with guns blazing. Hearing the jungle drums, The Phantom races to the rescue, taking out one bandit after another. Andy Kriss (Sol Gorss) and a few of the henchmen manage to escape, however, and Byron Anderson (Guy Kingsford), the fiancé of pretty Diana Palmer (Jeanne Bates), demonstrates his cowardice by almost deserting his post. Searching for straggling saboteurs, The Phantom is attacked by a ferocious lion.
