The "Welles" in question, of course, is Hollywood maestro Orson Welles, and the "other side" refers to his personal life. Though not commonly recognized, during his later years Welles spent a great deal of time in Yugoslavia, where he acted in such productions as David & Goliath and directed the ultimately-unfinished thriller The Deep (1970), based on the same source material as Philip Noyce's 1989 shocker Dead Calm. Deliberately schizoid in terms of form (recalling Welles's own F for Fake), The Other Side of Welles begins as a docudrama, with actors portraying Orson and his family at various selected points of his life, then moves into an extended interview originally shot for television and featuring the real Welles talking about his period of work and life in Yugoslavia during the 1960s and early 1970s.
