Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
This highly stylized and allegorical film chronicles a peasant uprising in northeastern Brazil. The story is told in a ritualistic, operatic manner and is rich in vivid imagery and avant garde music. The storytelling style bears a close resemblance to that used in mounting medieval mystery plays. One highlight is the knife fight between good and evil near the end of the film.
