Although she was on the sunny side of 40, stage star Fannie Ward was still able to convey extreme youth in such movie vehicles as The Marriage of Kitty. Because of a codicil in his inheritance forbidding him to marry an actress, Lord Riginald Belsize (Jack Dean), in love with music-hall performer Helen de Samiano (Cleo Ridgely), enters into a marriage with poverty-stricken Kitty Silverton (Ward). In exchange for a weekly stipend, Kitty agrees to remain Lord Reggie's wife in name only, while he continues his romantic pursuit of Helen. But his Lordship ends up falling in love with Kitty all the same -- due primarily to our heroine's cooking skills, proof positive that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Kitty likewise falls for Lord Reggie, and by film's end has done him a huge favor by proving that his actress paramour is a wanted criminal. The Marriage of Kitty was based on Cosmo Gordon Lennox's adaptation of the French romantic farce La Passerelle.
