Synopsis by Nathan Southern

Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov completed his four-act opera The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya in 1905, set to a libretto by Vladimir I. Belsky. Adapted from a combination of two different Russian legends - the City of Kitezh, which is said to have become invisible under attack from the Tatars, and the story of St. Fevroniya of Murom - it tells of Kitezh's miraculous survival despite the Mongolian Army's advancement. In authoring the work, Rimsky-Korsakov set out to create an opera entirely contemporary and cutting-edge; certain passages also recall the compositions of Richard Wagner in the previous century. This particular production was mounted at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari in Sardinia on May 2-4, 2008, and stars Mikhail Kazakov as Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich, Vitaly Panfilov as Prince Vsevolod Yuryevich, and Tatiana Monogarova as Fevronya. The Orchestra e Coro del Teatro Lirico di Cagliari provide musical accompaniment under the baton of maestro Alexander Vedernikov, Fulvio Fogliazza. Marius Nekrošius designed the sets, Nadezhda Gultiayeva created the costumes and Eimuntas Nekrošius directs for the stage.
