Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Released in its native Greece as Kaphetzou, The Fortune Teller stars Georgia Vassiladou in the title role. Instead of reading the traditional tea leaves to make her prognostications, Vassiladou prefers to interpret coffee grounds. Perhaps it's the caffeine, but the Fortune Teller's predictions nearly always result in comic disaster for her patrons. The humor in the film is so ethnically rooted that it's hard for a non-Greek viewer to understand what's supposed to be funny and what isn't. Even so, Georgia Vassiladou is a commanding screen presence, and it is her star power that holds the chaotic plotline of The Fortune Teller together.
