Synopsis by Cammila Collar

This romantic drama is based on the PC/Dreamcast/Playstation 2 game of the same name. It revolves around three high-school friends, Haruka, Takayuki, and Mitsuki. Romance blossoms between Haruka and Takayuki, and all is quite happy for the three. This happiness is shattered, however, one day when Takayuki is running late for a date with Haruka; when he arrives, she has been involved in an accident and is now in a coma. Takayuki is overcome with guilt, positive that his lateness caused the accident, and Mitsuki comforts him in order to help both of them cope with their grief. Three years pass, and Takayuki and Mitsuki slowly become unable to resist their attraction. They succumb to both their love and lust for each other, though hesitantly and with much guilt, and eventually end up sharing Takayuki's apartment together. Things are not peaceful for long, and their wounds reopen with Haruka awakening from her coma. The doctors suggest that Haruka's loved ones present the world around her as having changed as little as possible, and now Takayuki and Mitsuki are torn between loyalties, feelings, and obligations. Rumbling Hearts has been praised for presenting more realistic and oftentimes flawed characters than are typically expected from a high-school romance. The inclusion of sex in the relationships presented, while subtle and tasteful, is also unique for a genre in which such issues are usually glossed over in favor of more flowery portrayals of romance.
