Synopsis by Hal Erickson

World Films' Deep Purple was based on the Paul Armstrong/Wilson Mizner play of the same name. James Young warmed the director's chair, while his wife Clara Kimball Young played the leading role of innocent country gal Doris Moore. This was curious, in that Doris was probably the least interesting aspect in this tale of love and betrayal in Old San Francisco. The "plum" role in the film was reformed thief Frisco Kate, who was played by a lesser actress. Meanwhile, poor Doris spends the bulk of the film staring soulfully into the camera or trembling in terror as the villains use her as a pawn in a blackmailing plot levelled against self-made millionaire William Lake. The finale, in which hero and heroine are framed by a gaggle of superimposed winged angels, was silly in the extreme, and far beneath James Young's usual standards.
