Synopsis by Tracie Cooper

Known for combining the traditions of ancient mysticism along with pagan and Christian beliefs, Mexican paintings are widely viewed as both a visual and narrative guide to the Mexican culture throughout the ages. This video, by highlighting early Christian-themed art of the colonial period along with the neoclassical, decidedly more romantic, and later modern art of the 19th and 20th centuries, provides a comprehensive look at the history of Mexican paintings and painters. Some of the artists spoken of include colonial painter Baltasar de Echeve Orio, 19th century painter Jose Maria Estra, muralist Diego Rivera, and surrealist Frida Kahlo, among others.
