Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Another of the VH1 cable network's myriad of "countdown" miniseries, this five-parter lived up to its title by offering equal screen time to the 200 pop-culture personalities who had had the biggest impact on the "children of the '70s." Some of these icons were flesh and blood: Axel Rose, Henry Winkler, Dick Clark, Britney Spears, Sharon Osbourne, Ellen DeGeneres, Oprah Winfrey, etc. Some were fictional characters of live-action films and cartoons: Austin Powers, James Bond, Ralph Kramden, Beavis and Butthead, Cartman of South Park, and the like. And some would probably have either laughed uproariously or howled with rage at having been included on so frivolous a list, notably Sigmund Freud and John F. Kennedy. The 200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons began its week-long run on July 21, 2003.
