Television Delivers People (1973)

Synopsis by Brian Whitener
Associated with the New York School of painters, Richard Serra also made a number of important video works. Generally, his videos from this period, 1972-1978, are structural videos, that is videos whose subject is an examination of the medium's nature, Television Delivers People being the most famous of these. With scrolling text and canned music, Serra elaborates his critique of the ideological function of television. While there's a good deal of extraneous material, Serra's main point, that television delivers people to an advertiser, has become so generally accepted in today's world that is seems obvious -- which is a credit to this video.
