Synopsis by Rovi

Produced for cable's National Geographic Channel, the hour-long documentary series Taboo could be described as a Mondo Cane for the 21st century. Each episode offered a filmed record of unusual and bizarre practices, ritualistic and otherwise, indigenous to various far-flung parts of the world. These practices dealt with such matters as justice, faith-healing, rites of passage, child-rearing, extreme medical cures, exorcism, tests of faith, and body decoration. The rites and rituals seen herein were (according to the series' producers) previously "taboo," or forbidden, to the eyes of outsiders -- and besides that, many of them were illegal! It was all very shocking, sometimes repugnant, and invariably fascinating. Several of the first- and second-season episodes of Taboo were narrated by actor David McCallum of Man From U.N.C.L.E. fame. Launching its inaugural season on September 30, 2002, Taboo differentiated its subsequent seasons by adding a Roman numeral to the title: Taboo II, Taboo III, etc.
