This dramatized documentary focuses on the historic, suicidal charge of the 14th Calvary Regiment against a battalion of German tanks and its spiritual parallel in the early 1980s in Poland, the formation of Solidarity and a workers' movement. When old Polish war veterans from all parts of the globe (not just Poland) gather around a graveyard in Warsaw, they recall the heroic and doomed charge of 1939 and their memories bring back images of the event - and the desire to set up a war memorial for the men who died in that battle. Towards the end of the film, the December, 1980 unveiling of a memorial to slain shipyard workers is highlighted - conflating the two memorials as really one in truth. As though to emphasize the connection to the present, the story opens with a scene of a Polish eagle in the zoo and ends as the eagle tries to fly up - defying the cage that still confines him.
