Synopsis by Nathan Southern
LĂ©onide Massine choreographed this elaborate dance piece. Performed by the Royal Danish Ballet and filmed in 1948, it was actually a variation of his 1936 ballet, which in turn he'd adapted from the symphony of the same name 1830 ( Symphony fantastique) by Hector Berlioz. The 1948 performance appears here sans synchronized sound, but with a piano soundtrack by William Hicks, based on a piano score transcription by the great Franz Liszt.
