Susana begins with the title character (Rosita Quintana) escaping from a women's prison and making her way to a nearby ranch, where she disrupts the lives of its pious inhabitants by arousing the passions of the family patriarch, his adult son, and one of his ranch hands. With his characteristic scathing wit, director Luis Buñuel turns this morality tale on its head by pumping it full of sexual symbolism and playing up the script's melodramatic elements until they reach the realm of the absurd. Buñuel never missed a chance to take potshots at religious hypocrisy, and Susana's pointedly insincere "happy" ending is one of his funniest.
