No one is certain when surfing first originated but poets first noted this Hawaiian recreational sport in the 15th Century as he'e nalu, or wave sliding. This sport nearly diminished centuries later but was adopted by the Americans who were soon visiting the islands with its magnificent waves in the early 20th century and has become part of the U.S. culture, especially when it arrived in California as a sporting competition in 1907. This video is based on the ESPN television program and produced by Surfer Magazine that features some of the finest, most nerve-racking, thrill-seeking surfing action of the best surfers out on the waves, including surfing legends Tom Curren and Lance Carson.
