Synopsis by Gönül Dönmez-Colin

Su da Yanar is the most autobiographical film by Ali Özgentürk, who started his film career as an assistant to Yilmaz Güney. In a country suffering from a repressive military regime, a film director tries to shoot a film on Nazim Hikmet, renowned Turkish poet whose name was erased from Turkish literary history for being a Communist. In addition to difficulties the director encounters with the authorities, his personal life is in shambles as he is pulled in different directions by his wife, a doctor, and his mistress, an actress. There is also his daughter who keeps asking for explanations. Only when he is able to distance himself from everything that goes around him will he be able to begin shooting his film. Su da Yanar, which was co-produced with the Tokyo International Film Festival, opened that festival in 1987. Its censorship and confiscation of prints by the police resulted in many demonstrations by intellectuals in Istanbul.
