Synopsis by Kathryn Tamms

As the use of steam-powered locomotives waned in the 1950s and '60s, rail photographer Bruce Ward captured some of their final moments on film. Carrying both passengers and freight, the great locomotives steamed their way back and forth across the railroads of the western United States. The Union Pacific takes viewers over the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, while the Southern Pacific steams through California's beautiful San Joaquin Valley. The journey concludes with a visit on the Colorado & Southern to the headquarters of the Great Western Railway in Loveland, CO. This program offers a rare glimpse of a bygone era.
