Synopsis by Kathryn Tamms

As the use of steam-powered locomotives waned in the 1950s and '60s, rail photographer Bruce Ward captured some of their final moments on film. Carrying anything from passengers to freight to coal, the great locomotives steamed their way back and forth across the railroads of the eastern United States. The Norfolk & Western, Baltimore & Ohio, and Pennsylvania are some of the featured railroads that run through Ohio, Virginia, Illinois, and beyond. This program offers a rare glimpse of a bygone era.
