Ruth Colby (Dorothy Gish) wants desperately to be an actress, so she runs away from home and joins a traveling theatrical troupe. She meets up with a fellow aspiring actor (Victor Rottman), and they fall in love. They are married by an eccentric former Justice of the Peace (Spottiswood Aitken). Ruth and her husband are separated almost immediately when it turns out that the theatrical promoter was merely a crook who had taken all the players' funds and then stranded them. Poor Ruth winds up in a "Home for the Friendless" run by a wealthy woman -- who just happens to be her husband's mother. When the woman hears Ruth's sorry tale, she becomes furious and wants to track down the treacherous young man who left her...until she finds out that her own son is the supposed culprit. Of course the young couple are reunited, and they put their theatrical careers, such as they were, behind them.
