Synopsis by Hal Erickson

The self-explanatory Spelling Bee holds the distinction of being the BBC's first-ever TV game show. First telecast in 1938, this British series aired live from Alexandra Palace, with Freddie Grisewood serving as master of ceremonies. All reports indicate that the series was deadly dull, but it coasted by on its novelty. Apparently, Spelling Bee came to an end when the BBC ceased its TV activities at the outset of WWII, and never returned.
