Synopsis by Mark Deming

One of the first examples of Japanese animé to find a significant audience in the United States, Speed Racer was an animated television series whose bold graphic style, fast-paced action, and curious English-language dubbing won a cult following in America. Despite its title, Speed Racer: The Movie is actually a short feature cobbled together from two vintage episodes of the original TV show. "The Car Hater" concerns a young woman whose father has an obsessive hatred of automobiles, forcing Speed Racer (voice of Peter Fernandez) and his friend Trixie (voice of Corinne Orr) to step in and rescue her. The second segment, "The Race Against the Mammoth Car," finds arch-villain Cruncher Block pitting his new (and unusually large) race car against Speed Racer and the Mach 5, with potentially dangerous results. Speed Racer: The Movie also features several vintage television commercials, edited at appropriate moments into the episodes.
