Ugo Pirro was one of Italy's most celebrated and controversial screenwriters; he wrote films for Vittorio De Sica (The Garden of the Finzi-Continis), Elio Petri (Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion) and Lina Wertmuller (Ninfa Plebea) and also enjoyed a prolific career as a novelist, journalist and even a songwriter. Many of Pirro's most celebrated works focused on Leftist political issues and progressive causes, and he was known in many circles for his activism as much as his work in the cinema. Pirro was also the rare screenwriter who took pride in his work but understood his role in the process of filmmaking -- he once told a told a friend it was his role to think of images, and it was up to others to bring them to life on screen. Documentary filmmaker Daniele Di Biasio celebrates Pirro's life and work in Soltanto un Nome Nei Titoli di Testa, a documentary which received its world premiere at the 2008 Venice Film Festival.
