synopsis
The fourth filmization of Edna Ferber's novel, this drama is the story of a wealthy young socialite whose life abruptly changes when the family fortune disappears. Forced to take a teaching job in a conservative Illinois Dutch community, she eventually marries a hard-working farmer and finds herself expected to perform many laborious and menial tasks. When her husband dies, she is left to do everything herself. She vows that she raise her son to be self-sufficient so that he can better make his way in life.
