Synopsis by Mark Deming

A teenage athlete pushes his game to the limit in this action-filled sports drama from China. Big Mouth (Lin Xiaofan) is a high school student who's passionate about basketball and has impressive skills on the court. However, as his nickname suggests, he also has a habit of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, and is painfully shy around girls, even a cute classmate (Zhao Wenqi) who clearly has a crush on him. Big Mouth's father (Wang Zhigang) works in a sporting goods store and his boss is putting together a youth basketball league; while dad isn't sure how trustworthy his boss is, he sees an opportunity for his son to improve himself and persuades Big Mouth to sign up. Big Mouth finds his talents are being put to the test in a way he's never dealt with before, though during the many grueling hours of practice he renews his friendship with longtime pal Monkey (Zhang Yishan) and becomes close with American exchange student Jason (Andrew Chou). Kou lan dui jue (aka Slam) was screened at the 2008 Shanghai Film Festival as part of a special program of sports-related movies in honor of the upcoming Beijing Summer Olympics.
