Synopsis by Elizabeth Smith

Florence, Italy, is prominently featured in this second segment of Sister Wendy's five-part series on the history of painting. An early masterpiece of Adam and Eve is discussed in great detail before viewers are introduced to the genius of Leonardo da Vinci. Considerable attention is also given to Michelangelo and his masterful painting of the Sistine Chapel. Paintings rich in overt Christian themes and symbolism are quite common during this stage of history. Though artists enter this age still viewed as craftsmen, society is starting to embrace their singular and important voice. Rome begins to assert its views, with the Pope creates guidelines for religious paintings.
