In 1922, the issue of working wives was considered "a modern social problem." It's the wife's money and connections, however, which keep her husband afloat in this domestic drama. Betty Evans (Edith Stockton) and Nina Starr (Alice Lowe) are school chums whose lives take very different turns. While Betty works as a music teacher, Nina marries lawyer Edward Barnes (Stuart Robson). Nina, bored with life as a housewife, decides on a stage career, which causes a rift with her husband. Betty, meanwhile, has to fend off the advances of wealthy Jim Paget (Walter McEwen). She then marries inventor David Locke (Louis Kimball), only to discover that Paget controls the patent on his creation. When Betty still won't give in to Paget's advances, he cuts off Locke's royalties. To keep out of the poor house, Betty gets a job singing without telling Locke she is being paid. Paget and Locke fight it out, and Locke's invention is destroyed. Locke has to start over again and becomes successful, not realizing that everything he achieved has hinged on money secretly supplied by Betty. While Betty works to keep her own home together, she also orchestrates a reconciliation between Nina and Barnes.
