Former porn director Katsuyuki Hirano takes Hi-8 video camera in hand and records himself performing an act of gritty determination or singular stupidity -- bicycling through the northern snow-swept Tohoku region to Japan's northern-most point in Hokkaido in the dead of winter. With such great explorers as Perry, Byrd, and Scott in mind, Hirano toils over hills and empty plains as he inhales exhaust from passing cars and tries to maintain control over iced streets while his gears freeze up, along with blowing the odd tire. Along the way, he is hospitalized in Sendai for acute appendicitis, and learns to deal with the runs through a judicious use of maxi-pads.
