Director Hansal Mehta and screenwriter Sameer Gautam Singh collaborate on this biographical drama detailing the life of celebrated lawyer and human-rights activist Shahid Azmi, who stood up for India's Muslim minorities before being gunned down in his Mumbai office at the age of 32. Born into poverty in the slums of Govandi, Shahid bore witness to the growing violence between Hindus and Muslims as a young boy, eventually joining the jihadists but ultimately renouncing violence and returning home in his teens. Shahid's extremist past would later return to haunt him, however, when he was then wrongly imprisoned on terrorism charges shortly thereafter. But the weary wisdom of political prisoners had already made a lasting impression on the aspiring lawyer, and after being released he launched his career by going to work in a law office. It was during that crucial period of his life that Shahid took a bold stand against communal violence in India, and made it his life's goal to defend the voiceless and disenfranchised. While Shahid's courage and compassion helped to spotlight many of the problems that plagued his troubled country, however, it also earned him some dangerous enemies who became determined to see him dead.
