Filmmaker Andréa Seligmann Silva examines how some families stay together and how others drift apart, using her own mother as an example, in this documentary. In 1939, three-year-old Edith Seligman and her parents left the German city where she was born in odder to avoid persecution at the hands of the Nazis. Edith and her family ended up in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she lives to this day. Edith and her husband had five children, and while two currently live in Brazil, all five have moved out of the country at one time or another in search of a happier life, and daughter Andrea currently calls Amsterdam her home. What led Edith's children to move away from the land of their birth? Did their restlessness have anything to do with Edith's relocation at a young age? And what brought two of her children back to Brazil, even as they ponder another move? Separations was directed by Andréa Seligmann Silva in collaboration with Mieke Bal; the film received its world premiere at the 2010 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
