When a kitchen fire erupts, Max (Jason Behr) instinctively uses his alien powers to extinguish the flames. Though he throws a pot of water on the embers to make it look as if he put out the fire naturally, the investigators -- particularly Sheriff Valenti (William Sadler) -- are suspicious. At the same time, Max is trying to recover from his breakup with Liz (Shiri Appleby). Meanwhile, Isabel (Katherine Heigl) tries to convince Michael (Brendan Fehr) and Max that they should tell their foster mother what they really are. Michael and Maria (Majandra Delfino) continue to argue about their relationship, and while he doesn't tell her the whole truth, Max tearfully proclaims the gratitude he feels toward Mrs. Evans (Mary Ellen Trainor) for taking them in.
