Synopsis by Mark Deming

A man and woman brought together by fate struggle to survive in this powerful drama from filmmaker Wojtek Smarzowski. While the end of World War II brought peace to most of the world, it only brought strife to the Mazurian people of Eastern Prussia; hated by Russians for their German heritage and distrusted by Germans for their connection to Poland, the Mazurians have many enemies and few allies, and the end of the fighting only makes others more suspicious of what they see as divided loyalties. Tadeus (Marcin Dorocinski) was an officer in the Polish Home Army (a resistance force fighting for an independent Polish state) who deserted after he saw his wife raped and murdered by Russian troops; posing as a civilian, he makes his way to Eastern Prussia, where he's taken in by Rose (Agata Kulesza), a Mazurian woman who's German husband died in the war, leaving her to look after the family farm on her own. Russian troops occupying the area have taken to raping the local women as an act of revenge, and Rose has fallen victim to the Russians several times; despite the physical and emotional toll, she is determined to keep working the fields, and Tadeus is willing to help. Rose and Tadeus become friends and soon fall in love, but as he helps tend the fields, clear away mines, and keep Russian soldiers at bay, some begin to suspect he's not just a migrant farmhand. Roza (aka Rose) received its North American premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
