Synopsis by Cammila Collar
In 1985, Harmony Gold wanted to bring one of their mecha anime series over to American television but were met with a problem: none of the three series that they wanted to pitch met the 65-episode requirement for weekday syndication. Harmony Gold's solution to this problem was Robotech: Macross Saga. After much editing and rewriting, three unrelated series were combined to tell the story of three different generations fighting wars over the same issue: the use of a powerful energy source called Protoculture. The series Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada were the ones used, and while Robotech: Macross Saga is in no way simply an English version of any of these series, such strong elements of them remain that some ends left loose at the end of the original series are resolved within Robotech. The Robotech franchise has expanded greatly over the years, spawning many spin-offs and sequels.
