Minmei has been accepted into the Miss Macross beauty pageant, and Rick -- who already feels sidelined by Minmei's busy schedule -- isn't sure how he feels about that. The upcoming pageant is making others uneasy as well: the Zentraedi fleet is weakly receiving the Macross Broadcasting System's signal, and they have no idea what it means. Breetai dispatches three soldiers to approach SDF-1 in a recon vessel and record the transmission. As the contest gets underway, Rick is called in to intercept the recon ship. When Rick loses SDF-1's signal, he tries to switch the frequency, only to discover that he clearly receives the contest broadcast. While staring at Minmei's image on the screen, Rick nearly crashes right into the recon ship. The Zentraedi, however, are also distracted by the contest -- they're mystified by the contestants' skimpy "battle armor," and outright baffled by the sight of men and women standing right next to each other.
